AUSTRALIAN STOCK VS IMPORTED
More amp; more online stores are now selling imported mobile
phones which are sometimes referred to as "Grey Imports" or
"Parallel Imports". The main advantage of these are the
cheaper prices. Many stores will ship the products directly
from an overseas location (usually Hong Kong or Singapore) to
you. Some will import the phones themselves and then ship the
phones to you from Australia.
Advantages of Parallel Imported stock:
Usually Cheaper
Some phones or
colours are available that were not released in Australia
Some phones are
released earlier in other countries'.
Phones that are
discontinued in Australia may still be available overseas.
Disadvantages of Parallel Imported stock:
Longer warranty times.
As the warranty is usually only valid in the country where the
phone was released for sale, usually you will need to send the
phone to the Seller for warranty. They may send the phone overseas
for warranty service.
Software
differences. Some phones may have regional content or
customisations. Advanced users can often change the software
to the Australian version.
So the decision to purchase Australian stock or Imported stock may
come down to your risk aversion regarding the warranty versus the
price saving. Often for cheaper phones ($200 and less), it may
be better to purchase Australian stock as there may be little price
saving. And for more expensive phones ($500 and more), it may
be worth to purchase Imported stock due to a price saving of possibly
hundreds of dollars.
