Scabies Mites Alter the Skin Microbiome and Promote Growth of Opportunistic Pathogens in a Porcine Model
There is currently few experimental data demonstrating directly that mite infestation promotes bacterial infections. Here, Pearl M. Swe and colleagues investigated the impact of the scabies mite infection on the normal pig skin microbiota in the inner ear pinnae in young piglets.
Prospective Study of Leptospirosis Transmission in an Urban Slum Community: Role of Poor Environment in Repeated Exposures to the Leptospira Agent
Residents of urban slum settlements are at high risk for leptospirosis, but the specific risk factors for transmission in these settlements are not understood because of the lack of prospective studies in this epidemiological setting. For this research article, Ridalva D. M. Felzemburgh and colleagues performed a prospective study in a Brazilian slum community to measure the risk of infection, identify the environmental and social factors that place slum residents at risk for infection, and determine whether some individuals are at risk of repeated infections.
Exposure to Multiple Parasites Is Associated with the Prevalence of Active Convulsive Epilepsy in Sub-Saharan Africa
Epilepsy is common in developing countries, and it is often associated with parasitic infections. In this research article, Gathoni Kamuyu and colleagues investigated the relationship between exposure to parasitic infections, particularly multiple infections and active convulsive epilepsy (ACE), in five sites across sub-Saharan Africa.
