Kansas City region recognized as ldquo;Climate Champion rdquo;
On Dec. 3, the White House and U.S. Department of Energy named the Greater Kansas City region as one of 16 ldquo;Climate Action Champion rdquo; communities in the United States. MARC applied for the designation in partnership with the city of Kansas City, Missouri; Johnson County, Kansas; and Bridging The Gap.
This award means that the Kansas City region will have access to future funding opportunities that are available specifically for Climate Action Champions, as well as a wide range of technical assistance, including access to renewable energy experts, a peer network, validated climate data, participation in resilience planning exercises and partnerships with federal facilities. News release raquo;
Emma Miller, age eight, honored as ldquo;9-1-1 Hero rdquo;
On Monday, Nov. 24, the Mid-America Regional Council rsquo;s Public Safety Communications program and the Kansas City Fire Department honored Emma Miller, a local third-grader, for demonstrating the proper use of 9-1-1 in an emergency. On Sept. 25, Emma dialed 9-1-1 and told Communications Specialist Krystin Judds that she found her mother unconscious on the floor. The girl was at home with her mother, 6-year-old brother and 4-year-old sister. Thanks to Emma rsquo;s quick response, her mother received the medical attention she needed and made a full recovery. Planning Sustainable Places program will fund 13 area projects
On Dec. 16, the MARC Board of Directors and Total Transportation Policy Committee approved the allocation of $1 million in grant funds to 13 projects that advance sustainable development in the region. The Planning Sustainable Places (PSP) grant program builds on the work of the MARC rsquo;s Creating Sustainable Places initiative and goals of the region rsquo;s long-range transportation plan, Transportation Outlook 2040, promoting sustainable concepts consistent with a centers-and-corridors strategy. HTF luncheon connects landlords and service providers
Over 150 landlords and providers of services to the homeless attended the second annual Landlord Luncheon held by the Homelessness Task Force of Greater Kansas City (HTF) on Dec. 12 mdash; nearly double the number of attendees from 2013. The luncheon serves as a thank-you to landlords working with HTF partner organizations, and provides a forum for landlords to voice concerns presented by working with this vulnerable population. Prosperity at a Crossroads
Several years ago, a number of business, civic and community leaders raised the need for a more informed discussion about the economic future of Greater Kansas City. This included the desire for more sound research and rigorous analysis that can help residents and decision-makers alike better understand the economic performance of the region and begin a discussion about the future direction of the region rsquo;s economy. This report demonstrates the value of such an approach raquo;
