New online tool:
Easy Access Census Data
Each year, the Census Bureau releases two major sets of information concerning local communities using data from the American Community Survey (ACS). The ACS surveys about 3 percent of U.S. households each year. In September the Census Bureau releases data for communities of 20,000 people or more based on surveys taken between January and December the prior year, also known as 1-year data. In December, they release data for all communities and for geographic areas as small as a census block group based on surveys taken the previous five years (and creatively called 5-year data).
The ACS is one of many data sets used by MARC to better understand community conditions and trends as part of its planning responsibilities. MARC has a new online tool for accessing data that should make it simpler to obtain the most commonly requested community demographics. The creation of the online tool is an outcome of MARC rsquo;s efforts to increase its technical capacities and improve public access to the information it collects. Search for Census data raquo;
Stakeholder groups initiated for emerging tech
Emerging technologies are receiving a great deal of attention as public agencies and officials grapple with how to plan for their evolution and adoption. During the past 18 months, MARC staff convened two stakeholder groups to examine issues and create policy frameworks to help the region maximize opportunities and minimize negative impacts of two of these technologies: autonomous and connected vehicles and unmanned aircraft systems, commonly known as drones.
The Autonomous Vehicle Policy Framework supports state policies that enable and encourage autonomous and connected vehicles to be deployed in a safe, efficient and effective manner.
The Regional UAS Strategic Framework is intended to serve as a resource and guide strategic implementation of UAS technologies within the region.

Peer support team helps 911 dispatchers
MARC rsquo;s newly created 911 Peer Support Team is helping dispatchers and call takers around the region better cope with personal and job-related stress. The goal of the peer-based assistance program is to promote mental well-being through immediate, confidential support, stress reduction training and resiliency tools to prevent burn out and fatigue. Peer support members receive more than 40 hours of intense training with experts on how to help dispatchers cope with stressful situations. If you have questions about peer support, please contact Pam Opoka at (816) 701-8379. Read more raquo;
Reports focus on economy and workforce
Several recent reports highlight different aspects of the regional economy and workforce.
The 2019 economic forecast, presented in October, projects that the KC economy is expected to outperform the nation rsquo;s economy over the next two years after underperforming it in 2017 and staying even in 2018.
The KC Global Design Labor Analysis provides an in-depth look at the engineering and architecture sector, by industry and occupation.
The 2017 Quality of Life report analyzes results from a survey conducted by the Kauffman Foundation last year.
The 2018 Quality of Life report has now launched online. Read the news release raquo;
Download the Greater KC Recycling Guide
Knowing what to recycle curbside and what to toss in the garbage is not always easy. A quick-reference poster created by the MARC Solid Waste Management District answers your questions about what can and can rsquo;t go in your curbside recycling bin.
