Rise and fall of a flash in the pan
By: R. Neal
nbspshortURL
Several months ago I read about this Chinese company, LeEco, who announced plans to dominate world markets in entertainment, consumer electronics, electric cars, you name it. News stories emerged week after week about their awesomeness.
I had never heard of them or any of their products. I still don't know anything about any of their products and have never seen any of them for sale anywhere that I can recall.
Now there's this...

Volvo #039;s self-driving garbage truck
By: jbr
nbspshortURL
During a shift, a garbageman would manually drive the truck to the end of a block. Then he puts the truck in autonomous mode, and begins to walk back down the street. The garbage truck then autonomously backs down the street, stopping when it reaches a trash can. The truck stays stopped until the human hits a button on the side of the truck to indicate that the trash can was emptied. Then the garage truck resumes driving in reverse until it reaches the next trash can.

Sawflies killing my baby Loblolly!
By: bizgrrl
nbspshortURL
Walking鈥 out in the yard and glanced over at my 2-3 (3-4?) year old Loblolly pine, about 3 feet tall. All the new growth was missing. Looked closely and red headed sawflies were eating it bare.
I grew it from seed, so they didn't come from a plant nursery. I've never seen this type of infestation. Gross. Sprayed with Sevin. Hopefully I can save it.

Controversial Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke takes job with Homeland Security...or not?
By: Tamara Shepherd
nbspshortURL
CBS News, tonight:
Clarke has made himself a darling of the political right through his brash social media presence, his staunch support for Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration and his support for patrolling of Muslim neighborhoods. He's one of the most polarizing figures in Wisconsin politics. p
However...
Clarke confirmed his hiring to CBS Milwaukee affiliate WDJT, but the Department of Homeland Security sent out a tweet saying, "no announcement with regard to the Office of Public Engagement has been made."
Hmm. If he has been hired, he's off to a rocky start...

$9.3 million school board election
By: R. Neal
nbspshortURL
Winner spent $6.6 million.
Conservative billionaires backed the winner.
"Not surprisingly, most of these billionaires are big backers of conservative Republican candidates and right-wing causes. Several are on the boards of charter school chains.
What do the corporate moguls and billionaires want? And what did Steve Zimmer do to make them so upset?
They want to turn public schools into educational Wal-marts run on the same corporate model."
Not only is the hostile takeover of public education dangerous and disgusting, we are way past time to get big money and dark money out of politics.

Breaking: DOJ names special counsel to take over FBI Russia investigation
By: Tamara Shepherd

Per NBC, moments ago:
Bowing to public and Congressional pressure, Deputy U.S. Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed former FBI Director Bob Mueller on Wednesday to be a special counsel overseeing the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 campaign, Justice Department officials said.p
Mueller will take command of the prosecutors and FBI agents who are working on the far reaching Russia investigation, which spans multiple FBI field offices on both coasts.
Mueller led the FBI for 12 years under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

CLASSIFICATION PROTOCOL
By: cafkia
nbspshortURL
So, let's say there is a message being passed around the White House that says the Queen of England is wearing pink panties with purple hearts and butterflies today. What might that message be classified and why?
A lot of folks might think that such mundane information does not need or deserve to be classified. They would be wrong. They would be very wrong.
