New Reviews: Ray Harryhausen, Carnival of Souls, and Panic in Needle Park
This week the DVD Talk Review Database has some great new entries, including a few discs you may have overlooked.
Recent reviews include:
Ray Harryhausen: Special Effects Titan - a loving tribute to one of the most talented and wildly influential artists in the history of cinema; Carnival of Souls - a high point in low budget American horror from the sixties, standing tall alongside other notable genre entries like Night of the Living Dead; and The Panic in Needle Park - this movie is bleak as hell, but its loose style, infused with the energy of the street, and the outstanding performances from young Al Pacino and Kitty Winn make the film intensely watchable and highly recommended.

This Week's Notable Releases: The Ox-Bow Incident, Green Room, and Flight of the Butterflies
There are some new titles coming out that might make it worth a trip to the video store. Check out these recent releases:
The Ox-Bow Incident - director William Wellman's 1943 adaptation of the famous story is a damn good film that's absolutely worth revisiting, having lost none of its power or its poignancy over the seven decades plus since it was first made; Green Room - a member of a rock band sees something he shouldn't have seen after playing for a group of skinheads in Jeremy Saulnier's incredibly intense film; and Flight Of The Butterflies - a truly wonderful film, this educational movie is also lovely to view and tells an entertaining story... the 4K Ultra HD version is really impressive, but the 3D version is the one to watch.

New Reviews: The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Daughter of Dawn, and Maurice Pialat
Some great DVD and Blu-ray reviews have been added to the the DVD
Talk Review Database recently including:
The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959) - Hammer Films' quite good 1959 film adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel adds a layer of Gothic horror atmosphere to its retelling and features Hammer superstars Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee in two major roles; The Daughter of Dawn - Norbert Myle's restored silent Western from 1920 recounts a love triangle between Indigenous people from the Kiowa and Comanche tribes of the Southern Plains and is most notable for being the only film with an all Native American cast; and Under the Sun of Satan (The Films of Maurice Pialat: Volume 2) - based on a novel by Georges Bernanos, this is Pialat's only film to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Upcoming Releases: The Jungle Book, Supergirl, and The Huntsman: Winter's War
August is always a great month for home video releases... that's when a lot of the early summer blockbusters are released. Check out these titles that are scheduled for next month:
The Jungle Book [Buy on Amazon] - a live-action epic adventure based on Rudyard Kipling鈥檚 timeless stories, inspired by Disney鈥檚 classic 1967 animated film and centered on Mowgli (Neel Sethi), a man-cub who鈥檚 been raised by a family of wolves... bring it home on Blu-ray on August 30th; Supergirl: Season 1 [Buy on Amazon] - a new super hero will soon be flying into homes on August 9... all 20 episodes of the first season of the adventures of Superman's cousin will be released on Blu-ray and DVD; and The Huntsman: Winter's War [Buy on Amazon] - this all-star film featuring Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Jessica Chastain, abd Emily Blunt will be arrived in stores on August 23 - As two evil sisters prepare to conquer the land; two renegades - Eric the Huntsmen - who previously aided Snow White in defeating Ravenna, and his forbidden lover, Sara set out to stop them.
TV on DVD: Ninja Turtles, Game of Thrones, and Spoils Before Dying
TV on DVD and Blu-ray remains very popular with more and more favorites being released. New TV reviews include:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Beyond the Known Universe - this fourth season gets off to a terrific start with a bold new direction and a longer story arc that rewards patient fans with plenty of action, drama, and nostalgic winks from the past; Game of Thrones: The Complete Third Season (Steelbook Edition) - This newly released, Limited Edition Steelbook version offers new Dolby Atmos audio and the same great picture and supplements as the previous release; and Spoils Before Dying - this second mini-series parody by Matt Piedmont and Andrew Steele is filled with the writer's bizarre alternative humor, deadpan performances, the ridiculously over the top production design.

DVD Talk Interview: Paul Feig
It'd be a good week to go to the movies. Here are DVD Talk's recent theatrical reviews:
When Paul Feig was working on The Office in 2008, he felt a little slime-green with envy as two of his colleagues, Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, were offered the chance to help write Ghostbusters 3. Little did he know that he was only a few years away from directing a string of blockbuster comedies: Bridesmaids, The Heat, and Spy, all of which he made with breakout star Melissa McCarthy (who joined a rare club of comic actors when she was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance as brash but kind-hearted Megan in Bridesmaids). Now, it's his former "Office"-mates' turn to be jealous, as Feig tackled both co-writing and directing duties on this summer's Ghostbusters, a reboot of the franchise that reunites him with McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, as well as Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Feig was nice enough to clear a bit of time in his schedule to talk with DVDTalk over the phone, just days before his biggest movie yet opens in theaters. Read what he had to say in the latest exclusive DVD Talk Interview.
This Week's Notable Releases: The In-Laws, Only Yesterday, and Blood and Black Lace
Another banner week for DVDs with the studios releasing some great films and boxed sets such as:
The In-Laws - this film is so fun and breezy that it holds up well to multiple viewings, driven by the stars Alan Arkin and Peter Falk, an exemplary supporting cast and an outstanding writing and directing team; Only Yesterday - thanks to Gkids, this animated coming-of-age drama from Studio Ghibli is finally available on home video in the US... and it is a masterpiece; and Blood and Black Lace - Mario Bava's semianl film has been meticulous restorated and the picture looks simply stunning on this Blu-ray.
