Muscle and Surfing
What you need to know...
Picture Patrick Swayze walking out of the surf with the board under his arm, his abs gleaming in the California sun. Or more recently, Chris Hemsworth's Instagram pictures as he practices his surfing in Australia. Surfing builds muscles, it is as simple as that, the amount of effort used in engaging the core during the stand and surf part is huge, it really is no wonder they all have abs worthy of a Marvel Superhero, and what is the number one contributor to muscle building? Without a doubt, protein, but the question is are you getting enough protein?
Are you getting enough protein daily?
Recent studies suggest the answer is no, not even close unfortunately. The recommended daily allowance for protein at the moment is 0.36 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight. This suggestion puts me at approximately 58 grams of protein per day, now with an Oats and Whey shake for breakfast, tuna omlette for dinner and a post workout shake, we haven't even reached 3pm and I'm allowed no more protein for the day. Scientists now recommend either 0.68 grams per pound or as much as 0.75 grams per pound if you are looking to put on serious muscle mass, divided over the course of 4 meals per day. According to Robert Wolfe, Ph.D, the director of the Center for Translational Research in Aging and Longevity in Atlanta "When you look at the research, it's impossible not to be impressed with the benefits of a higher proportion of protein than the RDA in the diet". The simple fact is that if you eat more protein then "by and large, you're going to be fitter. Thats the reality"
When to eat, how much to eat and can you have too much?
Now, this may prompt people to switch everything they eat and just have protein after protein after protein. However our bodies don't exactly work in such a way. Typically for a 160lb male like myself I'd be aiming for around 120grams of protein per day, spread over 4 meals as mentioned earlier. Unlike carbs or fats, your body has no storage space for protein, so eating to excess has zero benefits. You will literally p**s the rest away, your bodies natural release for protein is the urine stream. So taking that into account the best times to eat your protein are breakfast, to fuel the body after fasting during sleep. Have some form of protein with your meal before your workout, as you ingest the carbs needed for the fuel it's always good to add protein to help you feel fuller and stop any overeating. The most important meal though would be within 30 minutes of your workout, and whey protein is easily the best option due to it's super high protein count and also its fast absorbtion rate, within 15-20 minutes of drinking it a Whey Protein drink is already absorbed into the blood and going to work on the muscles you've just hammered. Then over the course of the remainder of the day add a solid protein source, such as chicken breast, lean beef or tuna to the rest of your meals.
